Due to innumerable reasons that are tied to a certain place, a video game, already released in some places and that looks absolutely problem-free in one territory may be looked upon as unacceptable in another. This is one of the reasons why video game localization - as opposed to mere translation- is a must for games.
However one seemingly simple yet relatively deep and complicated question has always bothered me: when does localization go so far that it becomes censorship? And to what degree should this sort of censorship be tolerated?
In order to illustrate my thoughts, Yakuza 3 on PS3 shows well how thin the frontier between censorship and localization can be. A lot of gamers complained because some scenes and important elements of the games where changed when the game made it to US.
Now the question is: do all of these elements actually required to be changed? Isn’t that just based on a stereotype that American gamers tend to be more religious and concerned about nudity and violence? I assume that someone purchasing the third installment in a game series would normally have a pretty good idea as to what kind of content they were getting into, especially with a series such as Yakuza, which is relatively well-known. The games even receive ratings similar to films, giving the consumer an even better idea of what the game in question contains.
Most of gamers are reasonable adults who just want to enjoy the game as it is, instead of playing an edited, censored version of it. So please, developers, think of gamers first when you are localizing your games.
Video game translation shall always be respectful of gamers.

Because of numerous region, territory or country cultural specific reasons, a video game which is considered perfectly acceptable in one region might be disregarded as unacceptable in another. This is one of the reasons why video game adaptation - unlike mere translation- is necessary for video games.
But I’ve often been wondering: when does localization cross the line of censorship? And is that something one should accept?
I will show you a simple example, Yakuza 3 on PS3 shows well how thin the frontier between censorship and localization can be. Almost immediately, it came under fire for the huge cuts it suffered at the hands of Western localizers. Apparently, a significant chunk of the cut scenes, minigames, and events were removed from the US release, deemed “inappropriate” for American audiences.
This gets me wondering: how much of the cut content was actually “inappropriate for American audiences” as in “cultural differences would prevent full understanding and therefore only serve to confuse the player and impede their progress”, as opposed to “Americans are generally far more religious and uptight than Japanese people, so we can’t show them this kind of nudity and/or violence”? I assume that someone purchasing the third installment in a game series would normally have a pretty good idea as to what kind of content they were getting into, especially with a series such as Yakuza, which is relatively well-known. The games even receive ratings similar to films, giving the consumer an even better idea of what the game in question contains.
Now if you look at it, most gamers actually are adult and will absolutely not care to find certain elements. In fact, their absence may come as a huge disappointment for them and alter their gaming experience. So should developers think a little more about what public they are targetting, or just assume anyone may buy the game by accident, and thus edit it?.
Game localization is an important process to bring games to new people, and shouldn’t be taken that lightly.

I do love the way you have framed this specific challenge plus it really does give me some fodder for thought. However, because of what precisely I have seen, I only wish as other reviews pile on that people today continue to be on point and don’t get started upon a soap box regarding the news of the day. Still, thank you for this exceptional point and although I do not necessarily go along with it in totality, I regard your perspective.

Or maybe you could give us something to look at, whatever would connect what exactly you were saying, sth more concrete?

Get real, MY PARTNER AND I dont would like to explain how you can function your own site, yet what if people additional a thing for you to maybe receive individuals particular attention? Just like a movie or perhaps your photograph or two for getting people excited about just what exactly youve have got to declare. For me, it could generate the weblog come to life a bit more.
